My name is Martina Schreiber and I am the person behind massenweise. I am a social psychologist and police researcher, specialised in crowd events.

It all began because I like football and have always been interested in the way people deal with each other. Some years ago, in 1997, I saw how the Dortmund police actively brought together home and away fans (Dortmund and Manchester United, it was the Champions League semi final), facilitating them to having a party in the city centre - together. Later, I learned that this was very much in line with recommendations based on social psychological and behaviourist models: To facilitate legal behaviour and at the same time to set and communicate behavioural limits in a friendly and firm way. My interest got me into touch with a research group based at the University of Liverpool.  At the same time I was invited by the Office of the Federal President to a round table talk at the President's Palace in Berlin on the relationship of football supporters and the police. Funded by the ESRC, we evaluated the policing of the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal. Back in Europe, I became a researcher of the Netherland's Police Academy and member of the Academy's Public Order Knowledge Circle. During cooperations, I worked with the Criminology department of Ruhr-University in Bochum and the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and management of North Rhine-Westphalia. I carried out research around the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, single football games, and a number of demonstrations in several cities in Europe. Several of these in relation to the EU project GODIAC.

 

In 2010 I received my doctorate from Jacobs University Bremen. My thesis focused on 'Group relations at crowd events'. Data used here I had gathered at the tournaments mentioned above.  Altogether I observed more than 50 crowd events, for example in Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Chorzow, Colgone, Dnipropetrovsk, Donezk, Dortmund, Duisburg, Faro, Gelsenkirchen, Glasgow, Gorleben/Wendland, Innsbruck, Klagenfurth, Hannover, Lissabon, Liverpool, London, Porto, Stockholm, Vienna.
